TWILIGHT GOLF
Sunday, December 12, 2010 at 11:45PM TWILIGHT WRAP – WEEK 2
248 Twilight Golfers took to the course last week in what is still a battle that is being easily won by the player with scores at record low levels for the second consecutive round. Preferred lies with a bit of run on the course, matched with medium paced greens have seen the handicapper working overtime. Chopping shots off players left right and centre has had little impact on the scoring so far teams will feel the strain in coming weeks – that’s a promise!
Few people, if any have ever had the opportunity to skite about breaking their handicap by 10 strokes! It’s the golfer’s equivalent to shooting 59. It just doesn’t happen. Seeing Halley’s Comet is a more frequent occurrence. Anyway, this week it happened! Candice Hunter who is now in her 2nd season signed off on a 26 net. She shot a remarkable 44 off the bat and quite obviously was our ‘Player of the Week’. Her team the Worm Burners stepped out in their new shirts last Saturday and they played with a confidence of a team of Professionals. For her efforts Candice has won a Twilight 8s Polo or Motorised Cart Hire for her next round and unfortunately penalty of her new handicap which is 8. Other worthy notables for week two were young gun Zac Hanlon and the Floggers Murray Stivens on 28, Harry Cockshaw and Anthony Morton on 29 and Travis Doyle, Mark Lehman, Karl Fitzgerald, Joe Senes, Adrian Whitty, Brian Conlan, Stuart White and Michael Dilorenzo all recorded net 30. 33 and below was the ball competition cut off.
Team’s results for the week saw the Flinstones come back to life with a total of 161 followed by Acme Aces on 163 and the Crowaholics on 165. If you were playing to the Par of the course at this stage in the competition you’d unfortunately find yourself in 23rd spot out of the 30 teams, tough school.
Lastly, just a quick reminder to fill divots and repair plug marks on the greens to ensure our course stays in good shape for the summer.

Twilight Wrap for Round 3 –
222 starters enjoyed our warmest competition week thus far and the scores were even hotter. Plenty of run and the rough being cut short have made the course vulnerable and the players are taking full advantage!
Stuart White has returned to the comp after two year hiatus and is dominating for his new team “The Legends”, to a point where he and team mate Ashley Collins have delivered them team of the week honours by a massive 15 shots. The Legends finished on a combined total of 158 with the Rick O Sheas, Pink and Cruising the next best on 173. White will receive the Twilight 8s Polo or a motorised cart hire for his efforts and the mandatory handicap reduction which in this instance is 11 strokes!
Team standings after week 3 have new team the Smash Brigade one shot in front. Junior member Zach Hanlon is dominating the event thus far with two sub 30 performances in the last two weeks. Other players to shine for the team are new Twilighters Michael Dilorenzo, Jow Ciccia and the one and only Evan Killen….Swig N Swing sit in 2nd spot with the Legends in third.
Round 4 sees a new rule (decided through the off season survey) take effect. From this point on the maximum handicap reduction a player will be deducted is 4 strokes, no matter how far the player breaks by!
The ball competition cut off for round 3 crept out to 34 net and all players are asked to be conscious of filling in their divots and repairing their plug marks.

Twilight Wrap – Round 4
263 starters took part in week 4 of the Twilight 8s event with low scores still coming thick and fast due to the amount of run the course is providing.
This past round saw the introduction of our newest rule. Players from now on can only lose a maximum of 4 strokes off their handicaps per week. It’s advantageous only for those who are good enough to go lower than 32 net from here on in. The new rule was voted for unanimously by those who replied to the off season survey via e-mail…..
This weeks player of the round was decided on a count back after two players returned 28 net. Sonya Wyles from the Super Imposers was declared the winner over Keith Fletcher as her next best available score of 33 was enough to pick up the free motorised cart hire for any of the remaining rounds this season. Other players to feature in the round were Johnathon Dawson who returned net 29 twice for his struggling Worm Burner outfit, Robyn Locke also had 29 as did Ray Gough and Laney Lashbrook Gough. 5 players returned 6 under par net 30 and they were Phil Gray, Matt Rhodes, Joe Ciccia, Ray Rose & Wayne Gordon. Chris Butler was an honourable mention after parring the course off his 5 handicap to return a net 31 and Graeme Dale shot a 3 under par 33 to be the best scratch player for the round.
Team of the week honours were taken out by The Bradman’s on 160 who were at the opposite end of their namesake closely followed by Super Imposers on 164 and the very dangerous Woftams on 165. 3 solitary shots separate the top 6 teams in the overall standings with Acme Aces the surprise packet in this group as they are steered by the outstanding start to season from 3rd year player Phil Gray….Players needed 34 or better to win a ball.
TWILIGHT WRAP FOR ROUND 5 –
After 4 close rounds to kick the season we finally have a team who has pushed out in front with brand new outfit the Smash Brigade taking an ominous 15 shot advantage into round 6. The Smash Brigade are basically a team of players who were all last minute inclusions as individual or pairs looking to join the event. They now hold front position over last season’s division one champions Pink followed by Woftams, The Whymees and another new squad the Super Imposers.
Player of the round went to Jason Cregan who returned an 8 under 28 and he’ll win the shirt or the cart hire for his efforts. We are yet to see a player of the week winner above the 30 net mark which is rare although the course is still a little exposed with the fairways hard and fast and the greens running at a moderate pace. Others to impress in the round were Greg Milvain and Vinnie Campisi on 30 and Rob O’Callaghan, Col Thompson, Ray Gough and Joe Ciccia who all recorded 31. Players needed 34 or better to win a ball.
A few teams are struggling to get their players to commit each week and Captains are reminded that replacement players (especially for those who have yet played) are an option. Rotundas last round had 4 great scores of 34 and had to count a killer 45 as their 5th card. If you’re going away or cannot make a round it’s always good to have a spare card in the bank just in case as you can play as many times in the week as you like.
Lastly, a reminder that all players are encouraged to have a marker mark and sign their card – even if it is someone from your own team. Only in extreme circumstances will we allow a player to compete on their own and if a high number of cases continue a possible 2 stroke penalty may be put into place.
Australian Golf is in the middle of hosting some of the games top players with our National events and the Presidents Cup being played over the next month. If you get the chance to watch a bit on television take note of a couple of things you’ll see from the Pro’s. Focus on their mannerisms prior to hitting the shot and then watch the length of their backswings when hitting irons. Not one Professional will reach a parallel position at the top of the swing which is a fault the common golfer will make. Shorter always equals more control……
TWILIGHT WRAP AFTER ROUND 8 –
232 players competed in last weeks Twilight 8s tournament at the very lush looking Leeton Soldiers Golf Club. The rain may have stopped a few from entering a card last week but the golf course was the real winner with the fairways receiving a much needed drink.
3 players returned the magical 30 net score last round with the Floggers Brendan O’Connell awarded the player of the week shirt on a count back from the unlucky Andrew Locke and Ross Farlow. ‘Brendo’ completed his round his round on a wet looking Thursday night and had to be persuaded by his team mates to even take part as the thought of getting a wet tail didn’t really appeal to him…Andrew Locke will take some consolation out of his great round as it propelled his team 3 Degrees into team of the week status with a total if 169 net. Laney Lashbrook Gough had a blinder with net 31 whilst recording her lowest ever score off the stick to be the top lady of the round and help her team to a total of 170 net only a shot away from 3 Degrees. All above mentioned players received the capped handicap reduction of 4 shots prior to week 9.
3 rounds remain until the Xmas break when teams will be divided into three divisions of 10 teams each. Divisions will then become set for the remaining 10 rounds after play resumes on January 9th.
The Smash Brigade remain in the top spot within a very close competition overall. 25 shots separate what looks to be Division One and only 22 shots looks to separate what will become Division Two. That is merely the difference of having a good or bad week so expect a lot of fluctuation in the upcoming 3 rounds. The ball competition cut off was once again 34 and players are reminded to organise their partners for the “Beat the Pro” Ambrose on the 11th of December.
TWILIGHT WRAP FOR ROUND 9
Twilight golf’s biggest week thus far was the last round with 262 competitors taking part in the cooler calmer conditions and players seemed to have taken advantage of the golf course with Peter Rolfe breaking the 30 net barrier to be player of the round with brilliant 29.
Team standings fluctuated aggressively as some teams either jumped up or went down up to 5 spots in what is still an extremely close competition. Last season’s Division one grand finalists Swig n Swing and Pink are sitting tied 10th at the present on the cusp of Division one yet they are merely 16 strokes off first position, easily made up with a good next round. Last week’s leaders Smash Brigade went down 5 spots and the Whymees took over the front position and lead the Woftams by a solitary stroke overall. Team of the week honours went to Dead Solid Perfect on a team total of 170 net followed by Glenn Saddlers Acme Aces on 171. Some teams are still struggling to get all or even the majority of their players to commit each week resulting in higher total.
Peter Rolfe was followed by some exceptional performances such as first year players Vince Bruno, Jason Cregan, and Glen Robinson who all returned 30 net and Mint Slices’ Mark Gerhardy who returned a 31. Karl Fitzgerald was the only other player to receive the maximum handicap reduction after returning an excellent 4 under 32. Players needed 34 and below to win a ball.
Players are reminded that this Sunday Beat the Pro Ambrose is open to all players and is a 10am shot gun start. Players wishing to play socially or Twilight on Sunday will need to be either finished by 10 am or tee off after 2.30pm Sunday afternoon.
Final Twilight Wrap for 2011
The 2011-12 Twilight 8s Golf Competition is now in its festive season break and will resume for round 12 on Monday the 9th of January. Round 11 was the final week of play before teams were divided into the 3 divisions where they’ll remain for the rest of the season.
This season’s event has been one of the closest in recent memory and is provided by the fact that a single solitary shot was all it took to decide what teams went into which division. Murrami Magic finished 10th to grab the last spot in the championship division one stroke ahead the Bradman’s who fell straight into the lead position of Division 2. Nice work Laney! The same scenario occurred again as the Floggers kept the last spot in Division 2 by one stroke over new team Cruizing who took the lead of Division 3. Depending on how you look at it the competition still has 10 preliminary rounds to go and if you are 20 shots behind you only really need to make up an average of 2 strokes a week to be back at the top. This time of the season provides teams with an opportunity to make up lost ground. 8 players out of 8 each week will bring you up the ladder for sure. There are no excuses; if you are going to away it is well within the rules to put a spare card in and with beautiful weather forecast for January why not?
Round 11 saw the emergence of new squad Mint Slice. Formally known as the Big Sticks. Sloppy Sloan and his team of festive season friends put their new team shirts on and have not looked back. They rattled the competition with a 22 under par team total of 158, the equal lowest team round of the season thus far! The Green Machine can contribute their success to a couple of brilliant performances. Anthony Rourke returned a “Player of the Week” winning 28 net. This bloke is in my mind technically the best new player I have seen in Twilight comp for 6 seasons. He swings it like Steve O’Malley he’ll go a long way in the shortened format of the game. The other fella who needs a mention is the captain Sean Sloan. Sloany threw a 30 into the fold last week and although he swings it a bit more like an octopus in a sword fight 30 net will always be 30 net, good one Captain. Other notable individual performances came from Yenda Prods Duncan Bains who also had a 30 net, 14 strokes better than the underperforming Tommy Elwin who languished with 44. Take another one for the team Tom! Players needed the same old 34 to win a comp ball.
Leaders in Division One now has the Whymees out in front. They are the most represented team in the competition and deserve their position thus far. Following closely 3 strokes behind are Dead Solid Perfect and Swing and Swig who battled fiercely over the last 3 round to ensure their spot in the top grade. Division 2 saw the Bradman’s fall into pole position 3 strokes clear of the Flinstones and amazingly only 6 shots separates teams from 1st to 5th in this grade. Division 3 has 4 teams in a tight tussle at the top with Cruizing holding a single shot advantage over both the Legends and the Odd Squad with Good Doctors also close only a further 2 shots adrift. All divisions will see a fair amount of teams fluctuation post Christmas and every team in the competition still has the ability to make the top 4 before March’s finals series.
Twilight Golfers are more than welcome to come and play socially over the break and are reminded to call the Pro Shop if they need motorised cart bookings and to check the Course availability on weekends and or Public Holidays….Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
